    Course Summary

    The University of Wolverhampton’s Animation BA degree program is a great way to explore an exciting and rewarding career in a creative field. You’ll learn about combining visual representations with sound over time, producing both short and long form animations for a variety of different purposes.

    You’ll study all aspects of animation and animation production, including compositing, film editing, stop motion animation, 2D animation, 3D animation, character animation and even experimental animation techniques. You’ll also study related subjects like character design, sound design, storyboarding, script writing and visual storytelling generally.

    As a part of this degree, you’ll use the universoty’s state of the art studio space and learn to use the most cutting edge equipment. You’ll become familiar with many industry standard software packages as well, such as Premier Pro, Photoshop, After Effects, TV Paint, Mudbox, Maya, Autodesk and a range of Adobe products. Of course, you’ll learn to use traditional methods – paper, pens and paints – as well.

    Course Outline

    This degree program is typically delivered over 3 years at full time. However, it is possible to take a year in industrial placement between years 2 and 3, making this a 4 year degree for all practical purposes.

    Sandwich Year (optional)

    You’ll have the option of taking several smaller work placements throughout your degree, but many students prefer to take a full year to really ‘learn the ropes’ at one of the university’s partner organisations in the animation industry. This can typically be arranged with an organisation which specialises in exactly the kind of work you hope to be doing for a living, so that you can gain exactly the professional skills you’ll need to secure the most desirable roles upon graduation.

    Learning And Teaching

    Wolverhampton’s teaching methods vary depending on the subject matter being presented, but typically include lectures, skills workshops and blended learning experiences at a minimum. You’ll also do a great deal of reading, study and revision, either individually or in small groups.

    You’ll work in a studio context as well, working on both group and individual animation projects of all kinds. You’ll receive personalised feedback which will enable you to develop your skills throughout the program.

    This degree is an excellent preparation for a career, as you’ll have all of the skills necessary to take on a range of roles in the animation industry. Recent graduates have become Junior Animators, Production Assistants, Model Makers, Scriptwriters, Storyboard Artists, SFX Artists, VFX Artists, Rotoscope Artists, Layout Artists, Set Builders Editors, 2D or 3D Riggers, Digital Painters, Compositors, CG Modellers, Production Managers, Animation Producers, Animation Supervisors, 2D and 3D Animators and more.

    Entry & Credit

    Successful completion will result in a 3 year BA degree.

    Applicants must typically have earned 3 A Levels at BBC or better or the international equivalent. The full list of qualifications which are accepted can be found here.

    All classes are taught in English, and international students will be required to show proficiency in English by scoring well on an approved test. A good IELTS score would qualify, for example.
