    Course Summary

    A BSc degree in Microbiology and Biotechnology from The University of Wolverhampton is an excellent choice for anyone who wants to learn more about the microscopic creatures which make up such a large part of our world, and want to learn new ways of turning them to productive use.

    Microbiology of course will familiarise you with the microscopic life forms all around us, but Biotechnology will explore ways to use these creatures to produce new products, foods and treatments – ideally in ways which require less energy, fewer resources and less expense than current products and methods. As a part of this degree you’ll learn employability skills and have opportunities to apply what you’ve learned to real world problems.

    You’ll study the structure and function of biomolecules, genetics, cell biology, plant biology, microbiology and the other sciences underlying both disciplines at the university’s specialised, top of the line laboratory facilities.

    This degree program is typically delivered over 3 years at full time. However, it is possible to take a year in industrial placement between years 2 and 3, making this a 4 year degree for all practical purposes.

    You’ll have the option of taking several smaller work placements throughout your degree, but many students prefer to take a full year to really ‘learn the ropes’ at one of the university’s partner organisations in the biotechnology industry. This can typically be arranged with an organisation which specialises in exactly the kind of work you hope to be doing for a living, so that you can gain exactly the professional skills you’ll need to secure the most desirable roles upon graduation.

    Learning And Teaching

    Wolverhampton’s teaching methods vary depending on the subject matter being presented, but typically include lectures, skills workshops and blended learning experiences at a minimum. You’ll also do a great deal of reading, study and revision, either individually or in small groups.

    Employability skills will be included at every stage of your education, bit especially at the working placement stage. You’ll also learn the laboratory skills which will be vital to your employment.

    Entry & Credit

    Successful completion will result in a 3 year BSc degree.

    All classes are taught in English, and international students will be required to show proficiency in English by scoring well on an approved test. A good IELTS score would qualify, for example.
