    Course Summary

    Vancouver Island University’s Bachelor of Hospitality Management program is a great choice for anyone who wants to travel, work closely with the public and help others experience the best in life. This program will prepare you to take up a responsible, leadership role in the hospitality or tourism industries, managing a hotel, operating a restaurant or tourist attraction, or working in the sales or marketing arms of any business in these industries. 

    In addition to a great deal of general business knowledge and management skills, this program will deliver something that will set you apart from other applicants for your first few roles – real world experience. In each of the summers between your 4 years at the university you will participate in either a co-operative work placement or an internship in the hospitality industry. This is a paid position where you will be supervised by trained professionals, and evaluated by VIU personnel. 

    If you are changing direction after starting in another career area, you will possess valuable work experience and professional awareness. Many employers actively seek candidates with these benefits.     Learning And Teaching

    VIU offers many different learning and teaching methods, using both traditional and innovative techniques in its academic programs. This program features a great deal of work placement in addition to classroom study.

    You’ll attend formal lecture classes, practical skills sessions, problem solving exercises, and small scale tutorial sessions as well. You’ll have the support of the school’s academic advisors to help you plot the best post-graduation career pathway, as well.  

    Career Possibilities

    As international tourism becomes an ever larger part of the world economy, the hotel and tourism industries need more and more skilled graduates to help expand their operations. VIU’s Hospitality Management graduates tend to find middle and upper management roles at resorts, inns and hotels or food and beverage service companies. You might find a role as a management consultant, a sales or marketing professional, a hotel or restaurant owner or a manager at a larger organisation.

    Entry & Credit

    Successful completion will result in a 4 year Bachelor of Hospitality Management degree. 

    To enter this program, you’ll need to present your High School Transcripts, International Baccalaureate or similar international qualifications. Holders of a Culinary Management Diploma may be enrolled following a bridging semester.

    All classes are taught in English, and international students will be required to show proficiency in English by scoring well on an approved test.
