    Course Summary

The BSc program in Biology from Vancouver Island University is a highly hands-on experience, and you will learn laboratory and field based experimental techniques almost from day one. You’ll explore the way organisms interact with each other and their environments, the complexities of cellular structure and the functions of life, and also learn how to conduct, write up and present the kind of research that can have a meaningful impact on scholarship, industry or environmental policy.

You must select a specialisation in either:

    • Aquatic and Terrestrial Ecology
    • Microbial Biology
    • Molecular and Cellular Biology

This program can be taken as a Major or as a Minor in conjunction with a different degree. If you do opt for the Major program, you’ll be able to undertake an Undergraduate Research Project as the capstone of the program. This would consist of your own original research, conducted under the supervision of a Research Advisor with relevant expertise.

If you are changing direction after starting in another career area, you will possess valuable work experience and professional awareness. Many employers actively seek candidates with these benefits. Our network of contacts, a dedicated employability service and a reputation in the legal profession mean we also have an outstanding track-record of finding students legal employment. Many employers favour GDL students in an increasingly competitive legal job market. Through studying another degree subject, you will have gained many transferable skills. By taking the conversion route into law, you are showing motivation and determination by choosing law at a later stage than some others. This looks good to employers.

    Learning And Teaching

VIU offers many different learning and teaching methods, using both traditional and innovative techniques in its academic programs. This program features extensive laboratory and field work opportunities, as well as intensive research options.

You’ll attend formal lecture classes, practical skills sessions, problem solving exercises, and small scale tutorial sessions as well. You’ll have the support of the school’s academic advisors to help you plot the best post-graduation career pathway, as well.

    Career Possibilities

When you graduate you’ll have both work and research experience with two of the best known marine research facilities in the region – the Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre on the Northwest coast of Vancouver Island and the Pacific Biological Station in Nanaimo. Between that and the possibility of a 6 week Tropical Biology field school in Belize, you’ll have both the experience and professional network you need to find work in this exciting field.

    Entry & Credit

Successful completion will result in a 4 year BSc degree.
