    Course Summary

The study of Biology is really the study of living things and life processes generally. It is a wide term which includes the study of plants, animals, fungi and the symbiotic groupings which blur the line between the kingdoms. Laurier’s approach to Biology is integrative, seeking to show the inherent commonality between all known life forms, the processes within them, and the way they are organised on the biochemical, molecular, cellular and organic levels.

Laurier’s BSc in Biology includes theoretical studies as well as laboratory and fieldwork, and you’ll have plenty of opportunities to ‘get your hands dirty’ doing meaningful work within your chosen specialty. You’ll also gain a basic understanding of maths and chemistry, in order to fully appreciate the field and to prepare you for possible graduate level studies after completing the program.

In addition to the BSc in Biology, a Bachelor of Arts (BA) program is also available.

If you are changing direction after starting in another career area, you will possess valuable work experience and professional awareness. Many employers actively seek candidates with these benefits. Our network of contacts, a dedicated employability service and a reputation in the legal profession mean we also have an outstanding track-record of finding students legal employment. Many employers favour GDL students in an increasingly competitive legal job market. Through studying another degree subject, you will have gained many transferable skills. By taking the conversion route into law, you are showing motivation and determination by choosing law at a later stage than some others. This looks good to employers.

    Learning And Teaching

Laurier’s Biology BSc program is delivered primarily through lectures and seminars, though you will also attend laboratory skills workshops and special events. It is intended to give you the general scientific background you would need to enter into a graduate program in this or any similar field.

You’ll have the option of becoming part of a research program, such as:

    • “Effects of climate change on northern ecosystems”
    • “Evolution of mating behaviour in fruit flies”
    • “Interactions of plants with soil microbial communities”

    Career Possibilities

This degree will prepare you for a wide range of careers or graduate studies.

Recent graduates have gone on to become veterinarians, toxicologists, technical writers, technical sales representatives, teacher/professors, speech therapists, research associates, quality assurance managers, public health professionals, physiotherapists, pharmacists, naturopaths, microbiologists, medical professionals, land-use planners, laboratory technicians, government scientists, genetic counsellors, food safety inspectors, fisheries biologists, environmental consultants, dieticians, dentists, conservation biologists, biotechnologists and bioinformatics specialists among many other roles.

    Entry & Credit

Successful completion will result in a 4 year BSc degree.

Applicants must typically have completed a university preparatory program at a senior secondary school, or the international equivalent. This must include English, Chemistry, Advanced Functions, Mathematics and Biology content.

All classes are taught in English, and international students will be required to show proficiency in English by scoring well on an approved test.
