The University of Victoria started out as Victoria College more than a century ago, in 1903. At the time, it was affiliated with McGill University in Montreal. It is the oldest post-secondary learning institution in British Columbia, however. Though Victoria separated from McGill in 1915, it gained full university status nearly half a century later, in 1963. Much of the intervening time was spent in association with the newly formed University of British Columbia.
In 1921, the institution moved into Graigdarroch Castle, a mansion in Dunsmir. After a swelling enrolment post WW2, the school began transitioning form a 2 year college to a full university. By 1946 they had outgrown scenic Graigdarroch Castle, and moved to the Lasdowne Campus currently occupied by Camosun College.
The University of Victoria today (more often called UVic) occupies one of the largest campuses in North America, at 403 acres on the main site alone – at Cadboro Bay, a few hundred feet from the Pacific coast.
