St Mary’s University began in 1850 as a teacher’s training school with close ties to the Catholic Church. It soon outgrew its original campus at Brook Green in Hammersmith, and it moved to a larger facility at Strawberry Hill in 1925. This campus originally held around 250 students, but has been enlarged several times.
In 1966 the college began admitting women, yet remained primarily a teacher’s training school until 1975. After that time, students could earn BA, BEd, BH and BSc degrees, still issued under the University of London.
St Mary’s became an Associated College of the University of Surrey in 1990, and became a full College of that institution in 1992. The QAA and Privy Council granted St Mary’s the power to issue its own degrees in 2006, upon which it changed its name to St Mary’s University College.
St Mary’s today has room for some 6000 students and offers degrees in education, business, theology drama and sport. One of its component colleges in Twickenham became a stand-alone university – St Mary’s University College, Twickenham – in 2014.
