Brown University has a surprisingly long history. Its story begins in 1762 when a group of Baptists from Pennsylvania decided to establish a university in Rhode Island, one of the few New England colonies which did not already claim one. It opened as The College in the English Colony of Rhode Island in 1764, making it the 7th oldest such institution in what is now the United States.

Brown is a University of firsts, beginning with being the first US college to accept students regardless of their religious affiliation. It was also one of the first US institutions to offer doctoral level degrees, with its PhD in engineering opening in 1887. It was also one of the first schools to do away with ‘general education’ requirements in 1971, allowing students unprecedented control of their curricula.

Brown University today is a major Ivy League research university dedicated to discovering, preserving and disseminating knowledge to the local community, the nation and the world as a whole.
