Dartmouth College, despite its name a very well respected US university, is actually the 9th oldest such institution in the US, and one of only nine that dates to before the American Revolution. Its original charter was issued by King George III. It was established in 1769, largely as a Congregationalist seminary. It granted its first degrees in 1771.

Dartmouth was teaching African American students as early as 1775, and by the end of the Civil War its Medical School had its first black graduates. It incorporated the New Hampshire College of Agriculture and the Mechanic Arts in 1866, and underwent a huge modernisation effort beginning in 1893. By the early 1900s, it was a fully secular institution with a national reputation for the quality of its liberal arts curriculum, and a full member of the ‘Ivy League’.

Dartmouth College today offers 57 different majors in fields like Engineering, the Natural and Social Sciences and the Humanities, across 40 different departments.
