Michigan State University (Typically referred to as simply MSU) was founded more than 160 years ago, in 1855. At the time, it was called the Agricultural College of the State of Michigan, though this was shortened to simply ‘State Agricultural College’ in 1861, and to ‘Michigan Agricultural College’ in 1909. It was the first of the Morrill Land Grant universities.

With a move towards an expanded curriculum in the decade following World War I, the name was changed to the Michigan State College of Agriculture and Applied Science. In fact Michigan was the first American school to teach scientific agriculture at the college or university level.

It achieved full university status after WWII, becoming Michigan State University of Agriculture and Applied Science in 1955. The school adopted the current name of Michigan State University more than 50 years ago, in 1964.

Michigan State University today is one of the largest universities in the US, and boasts more than half a million living alumni.
