The University of Washington – more commonly called simply UW – was created in 1861 in Seattle Washington’s developing downtown. Indeed, the city of Seattle was barely a decade old at the time, and the university was one of its most important features as it grew to a major American city.

Initially known as the Territorial University of Washington (Washington was not yet a ‘state’), it struggled at first. In fact it closed on 3 occasions – In 1863, 1867 and 1876 – and its first actual graduate earned a BSc in Science only in 1876.

The University of Washington today has more than 54,000 students spread across the Tacoma, Bothell and Seattle campuses and is accredited as a major world research university. It spans over 500 individual buildings and 20 million square feet of floor space!

UW is dedicated to providing an amazing university experience to all of their students, both academically and socially. Its dedication to access, opportunity and justice for all is one if its greatest strengths.
