What does this book cover?

Materials: Engineering, Science, Processing and Design is designed to beginning engineering and materials science students understand the different properties of common engineering materials, and to develop their own methodology for choosing materials based on their physical and mechanical properties, cost and other factors.

This edition of Materials: Engineering, Science, Processing and Design includes detailed coverage of:

  • The core principles of materials science and engineering, from a design-based perspective
  • Corrosion, phase diagrams & transformations, crystallography and microstructure analysis
  • The properties of common engineering materials, how they are processed, and which to select for different design goals

About the Authors

Professor Hugh Shercliff teaches at Cambridge University, where he serves as a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Engineering. He is a frequent co-author with Mike Ashby. Ashby is Professor Emeritus at Cambridge, and a former visiting professor at the Royal College of Art. He is a noted author of textbooks in materials science and engineering.
