Music: A Very Short Introduction is a broad overview of the many different musical traditions, different cultural approaches to music, and its role in society.

What does this book cover?

Music: A Very Short Introduction is a supreme example of the Very Short Introductions series. These books are essentially bite-sized surveys of an amazing variety of different topics. That makes them a great way to get a taste for a subject and assess whether you would enjoy more in-depth study. In particular, this volume explores everything from the musical traditions of the ancient world to modern day streaming services.

This new edition of Music: A Very Short Introduction covers:

  • The ways digital technologies have changed the way music is produced and consumed
  • Music’s place in the increasingly globalised economy
  • Music’s role in cross-cultural communication, colonisation and decolonisation
