The Complete Musician is a practical and contextual approach to learning musical theory which is perfect for undergraduate level classes or for use in self-teaching.

What does this book cover?

The Complete Musician: An Integrated Approach to Theory, Analysis, and Listening is a deep dive into the theory of music, but it doesn’t linger on the ‘theoretical’ level. Rather than listing terms and urging you to memorise concepts, it relates what you will be learning to real music, on a practical and easily approachable level. It also contains plenty of practical exercises.

The Complete Musician also explores:

  • How composers and performers actually use musical theory in practice
  • How composers modify these formal structures to suit their tastes and vision of music
  • How music theory evolves through gradual changes made by individual composers and performers
